A Pocket Guide to Leipzig

On behalf of the Local Organization Committee we welcome you to the city of Leipzig!
We would like to give you some practical advice and hints as well as information about the city itself. Hopefully this will help to make your stay here easy, pleasant and enjoyable. First we will give you a short impression of the transport system, infrastructure and time required to move around the city. Then we put the stress on some basic information about Leipzig and its history. And finally we would like to invite you to visit some places of interest and enjoy cultural and culinary pleasures.

Transport System

In general you will receive with your registration a preliminary nametag, which will allow you to use free transport from/to the airport and within Leipzig. Included are all transport systems available as there are trains, trams/streetcars and buses. Taxis are also very efficient and they are usually easily engaged in front of important buildings.
The Leipzig Congress Centre (CCL), where the congress will take place, is located on the Leipzig Trade Fair Grounds („Messegelände“), 7 kilometres to the northeast of the city centre. There are different ways to get to the CCL. We recommend going by tram/streetcar (“Straßenbahn”), because the service is easy accessible, wide spread, runs on a high rate and takes you closest to the entrance. Alternatively you can take the train from Leipzig Main Station (“Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (Hbf)” to “Leipzig Messe”.

Helpful links: www.bahn.de (multilingual), www.lvb.de (in German only)

  1. Airport to CCL: Reaching Leipzig by plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport you will leave the check-out/customs for the arrival hall. For going by taxi (approx. 22 Euro to the CCL, 27 Euro to the city center) just leave the hall for the taxi stand right in front of the building. For going by train use the escalator to the right hand side. A gangway will take you at the end to another escalator leading downstairs to the train tracks. From track No. 1 you are able to take every half an hour (during daytime, departing on minute :24 and :51) a regional train to “Leipzig Messe” (for CCL, 8 minutes) and further to the terminus “Leipzig Hauptbahnhof” (for main station/ city centre/ main hotel accommodations, 14 minutes).
Airport to City Centre (eq. for accommodation): Same way as above, but stick to the train till reaching the terminus “Hauptbahnhof”.
City Centre to CCL: Most convenient: The tram No. 16 leaving on the main stations forecourt on platform 1 to terminus “Messegelände”. It will take 19 minutes by tram and please calculate another 10 to 15 minutes for walking from tram to CCL, entering it and reaching the lecture halls. We would recommend allowing you about 35 minutes for to whole way.
Reaching Leipzig by train (for example from Frankfurt, Berlin or Munich): The Leipzig main station is a terminal point, so no hurry is needed to get off the train—you’ll have a few minutes to recognize that you’ve arrived in the Leipzig Hbf.
  1. Getting Around in the City: The main orientation point is the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) which is on the north-western edge of the city centre. If you follow the signs from within the Hbf to “City Centre” you arrive at a main thoroughfare (the so called “Ring” – a circle of main streets enclosing the city).  In the middle of this boulevard, just across from the Hbf, are the tram lines. If you continue across to the other side, you will enter the city centre. The inner city is very small - roughly 1 kilometre in square. Nearly everything is within walking-distance. Major tram changing points, which connect well to the Fair grounds, are: Main Station “Hauptbahnhof” and “Augustusplatz”. If changing tram lines is required: Every tram line will connect to “Hauptbahnhof”.
